When we caught wind of a minitrucker who had purchased Last Look to restore it, after it's been through its share of "uneducated" owners, we were ecstatic. We got with Uncle Fester and the dedicated crew that have been helping with the restoration to put together a little repair story in honor of one of the most commemorated minitrucks ever built. The talented team consists of Uncle Fester, James Strassner, and James Cummins from IIGW, www.ifitsgotwheels.com. Together, they vowed to bring Last Look back to life, and trust us, this was no easy task. The truck had obviously seen much better days. For this story, we're showcasing the roll pan repair, as it was in pretty bad shape and needed some attention.
| | To figure exactly what needed to be repaired, the crew had to assess the damage. |
They began by grinding down possible filler to determine if the structure is sound behind the mud. | In this case, it looked like the roll pan got hung up on something and pulled out, so they made some relief cuts to bend the pan back. | A piece of tube stock was welded in behind the pan to reinforce the bottom and mitigate any future chance of major damage. |
Next, they sanded away all of the flaking paint to create a solid base for paint repair. After a prepped surface was made, it was time to play with some mud. | Once all the bodywork was done, etching primer was sprayed to seal our work and reduce chances of rust under the paint. | Mask all graphics of the same color first, if possible. In this case, they had to redo the checkers, so black was shot without major regard for lines |
After that dried, they masked off the black and shot the white for our checkers. A few lines needed to be more crisp, so we found tools lying around the garage to complete this task. | This particular truck has many graphic elements that pose unique challenges. Each individual graphic was masked and reproduced using replica pictures.
After the major graphic elements were finished, it was time to add the finishing touches. | Pinstriping and clear, and the roll pan was as good as new. A piece of minitruckin' history is now closer to total restoration.
