There are typically two classifications for mini-trucks besides their brand name: open bed and closed bed. The only difference between the two is the existence or absence of a pickup shell on the bed area. Those trucks that run bedcovers, also known as tonneau covers, are classified in the category called open bed.
To get our SEMA-bound project truck closer to being ready for the show, we pulled off the factory bedcover that wouldn't work with a shaved tailgate and installed a flush-mounted fiberglass bedcover from Checker Products in Benton, Kentucky.
In only about 15-20 minutes with basic tools, we had a trim, awesome-fitting bedcover on the truck. We were then ready to get the truck to its next destination for bodywork and paint.

 The tonneau hinges for the...  The tonneau hinges for the front of the bedcover come already installed on the bedcover, but they have no holes in them. This makes installation easy because you can place the self-tapping screws that come with the tonneau where you need them most for support. |
 We decided to first install...  We decided to first install the supports for the upper strong arms on the tonneau before we even approached the truck. This kept us from having to hold the tonneau up in the air any longer than we had to. |
 Next, the tonneau was test-fitted...  Next, the tonneau was test-fitted onto the bed of the Desert Dragger. Checkmate bedcovers are made to order, using the measurements given to them for a perfect fit every time. |
 With the tonneau supported...  With the tonneau supported on the bedrails and being held in place, we marked the area to keep the front hinges within to install the leading edge of the tonneau. |
 We then sent the skinniest...  We then sent the skinniest installer at Suspension Dimension into the bed and over the rear suspension crossmember to affix the hinge by sinking the self-tapping screws into the bed's bulkhead. |
 Next, we carefully measured...  Next, we carefully measured the stroke of the Checkmate cover's strong-arm supports and installed the lower mounting brackets on the bedrails. |
 With both upper and lower...  With both upper and lower supports in place, the strong arms were simply snapped onto the support brackets and locked in with the collar at each end of the head of the strong-arm. |
 Next, we installed Checker's...  Next, we installed Checker's simple yet ingenious tie-down system to keep the tonneau from floating without the use of exterior locks. We simply installed the lower mount using self-tappers. |
 The upper tie-down holes come...  The upper tie-down holes come pre-drilled. You simply set the screws into place and tighten them down. |
 Depending on the slack you...  Depending on the slack you give the tonneau, the cover can be set up to where it can't possibly move. This is a great feature, especially when you're rolling down the freeway at 95 mph. |
