Being a girl in the truck scene is never an easy thing. This industry has always been overrun by a very strong male presence, the type of dog–eat–dog world that would send a girl running in the other direction. That’s why it’s always refreshing to see a female–driven truck. Not only does Marisa radiate confidence, but also the quality of her truck speaks for itself.

I wanted to prove that girls can drag just as good as any guy can.

This ’93 Hardbody was bought half ’bagged and bodydropped. Like any typical fixer upper, it had bad wiring and one hell of an oil leak. It hid behind really bad bodywork, and Marisa knew it would take some major mechanical work to bring this truck back to reliable running condition. With the kind help of her boyfriend Tom Townsend, she jumped right into the repairs, quickly turning this restoration into a full custom build.

Being involved in the minitruck scene for a while, Marisa knew what her likes and dislikes were involving customization. This gave her the upper hand when deciding what specific modifications she wanted done. Making due in a cramped two–car garage with a two–month deadline, she was optimistic the truck would be debuted at the World of Wheels show in Chicago, Illinois.

The build commenced in a completely different manner than most builds do. In Marisa’s words, “We did everything inside out, in order to save time at the end. We had to be creative no matter what we tried to do.” First, the pre-existing engine issues were tackled, and while they were underhood they rewired and tucked it away to clean it up. Shortly after that, they moved to the interior. The Mitsubishi seats were cut to fit and wrapped, they made custom door panels, armrest and speaker box, and then proceeded to focus on the suspension. The longest part of the build involved the bed. Marisa and Tom hand cut wood planks, and together they sanded, stained, and glazed each piece. Before installation of the wood planks could be complete, Tom and Marisa converted the two–car garage into a paint booth. Tom, who paints vehicles for a living, was able to ensure the garage was well vented, in order to ensure the quality of the job was not compromised.

A slight mishap was encountered before the truck was painted. While making some fabrication changes, Tom was grinding the bed and a shard of metal shot into his eyeball. This pushed the deadline back three weeks. Luckily, Tom`s eye has healed and his vision is fine but looking back, they can both laugh at his luck during this accident (and they emphasize the importance of wearing safety glasses even if they aren’t fashionable). When talking with us, Marissa admitted, “There was never a dull moment building this truck, every little detail turned into a crazy adventure … but it was well worth it.”

When Marisa was asked about her color choice, she stated that she originally wanted to go with a light baby pink but was unimpressed by all of the colors she saw. The bright Magenta caught her eye on more than one occasion, which was the deciding factor. In three days, Tom had completed the paint and her Hardbody was shining more beautiful than ever.

Marisa had been one busy girl, but ultimately she debuted her truck at the show she intended to. Although there were several speed bumps encountered and constant issues to overcome, she now drives her truck with pride, knowing that she can help motivate others to follow their dreams. “I think women are intimidated to be in the scene because it’s mainly men, but I wanted to prove that girls can drag just as good as any guy can.”
