Danny Hollefreund is one of those minitruckers who's been doing it since way back when. In fact, he is one of the OG guys who spawned much of the Northwest's minitruck revival. Back in '97, he had one of the cleanest and lowest Mazdas around. That's right; the same truck you see pictured here was built more than 10 years ago!
Since this Mazda was built years back, Danny had the pleasure of seeing many of the industry's biggest innovators work on getting her to the ground. Probably the only mistake was having Brian Jendro do the body-drop before the truck was adjustable. The Dawg had to be driven all the way back to Washington from Southern California without the ability to turn. Getting off the freeway to get gas turned out to be a lesson in 25-point turns. But, have no fear. The truck went off to Rob at the Drop Shop a couple of days later to get juiced.
As it happens to the best of us, life caught up with Danny. Before he knew it, his wife had a third, then a fourth kid, and life got a little too busy. His heart is and always will be into minitrucks, though. You can count on seeing Danny at a show with a smile from ear to ear, and he'll be the first to extend his hand for a shake, then talk your ear off about what's new.
After about three years of his Dawg collecting dust nestled in his garage, his club, Sittin' Pretti, decided to bring it out of hibernation and brought it to the annual Summer Slam show, letting everyone see that it indeed still existed. It then became Sponge's job to get the "Old Dawg" to the show, which wasn't easy since all the batteries and engine were almost dead.
So Sponge, along with good friend, Jimmy Reese, who has the engine knowledge of the group, spent about a week and got the Dawg breathing again. After a quick detail to the interior and motor, it was loaded up onto the trailer and headed to Shawn Altermott's house. Shawn went to work shining the paint back up. He finished about the time the sun came up on the morning of the show.
At the show, the club's efforts were rewarded by the excitement of all the minitruckers who have met Danny over the years. Danny is a true icon in our industry, and he is proof that an old dawg can learn new tricks!
