There are several myths commonly thought to be true among the readers of most magazines as well as those who attend truck shows. Myth number one is that if you own any kind custom shop, you must have the coolest ride and the best parts that money can buy at all times. The reality is that a large percentage of shop owners, fabricators, and painters spend so much time building and perfecting their customer's rides that they don't find the time (and in some cases the cash) to quench their own custom thirsts. Some of the best customizers are so picky about their work that they spend the better part of a lifetime building the sickest rides on earth purely out of love for our hobby, not the cash.
For most professionals, the path to a fully customized vehicle of their own is a long and tedious one filled with many months of watching their own projects get pushed aside while their customers come first. There are a few exceptions to this rule, though, and one of them is that many shop owners do find the time to build a rolling billboard for their business. This is a very important exception, one that any shop will be quick to jump on. The right business card (mini-truck) can make or break a shop's reputation. Knowing how important this is, Joel Stevenson, owner of Ten Ten Custom Paint in Las Vegas, dove right into his daily driver, a '99 Chevrolet S-10, and came out less than three years later with a mini that regularly pulls First Place trophies at every show it attends. Not too bad for someone who also regularly busts out awesome custom paintjobs for his customers and drives his show truck 45 miles to the shop every day. His mini demonstrates his god-given talent for moving a paint gun across metal and plastic and transforming inanimate objects into art. It also shows off the talents of the shops that are responsible for his mini's clean interior and audio system. With that, sit back, relax, and give Joel his props as his mini is put on display for you to admire.
RJ Motorsports of Las Vegas 'bagged Joel's mini using Belltech drop spindles and Air Ride Technologies airbags up front. In the rear, a super C-notch was welded into the framerails prior to the installation of another pair of 'bags. Belltech Nitro-Drop shock absorbers smooth out the road.
Alba built the phatty 20x8-inch Karma rims and Falken made the P255/35ZR20 tires.
Joel's shop, Ten Ten Custom Paint, wasted no time in taking the razor to his mini, shaving the door handles, the taillights, the tailgate handle, and the stepside bed steps. The shop also frenched in the antenna and installed a set of LED taillights that shine brighter than their factory counterparts. A Street Scene speed grille was custom painted and installed along with a matching set of headlight covers that hide a set of APC headlights. Rounding out the mods is a Sir Michaels fiberglass roll pan.
Joel also took advantage of his mini's factory Indiglow Blue paint and adorned it with 25 different DuPont hues, creating the dazzling tribal racing stripe graphic that runs in and out of the truck's interior, engine compartment, and bed. Interior Pappa Squat Custom Upholstery tweeded the entire interior, and Action Motorsports of Pahrump, Nevada, accessorized the interior with billet aluminum. Joel then sprayed his mini's dash with graphics that matched the exterior of the truck.
Jay Johnson and Tony from Action Audio and Motorsports constructed and installed the high-end audio system in Joel's mini. First they gave it a bass boost in the form of a custom enclosure that houses a pair of Rockford Fosgate subwoofers as well as two Rockford amplifiers. They also built custom door pods to house the component speakers and installed a Pioneer head unit and equalizer.
Action Audio and Motorsports installed an Optima battery, a K&N air intake, and a custom exhaust system.
"I built my truck to make a statement and gain attention for my custom paint shop, Ten Ten Custom Paint. I'd like to thank my wife, Molly, Alba Wheels, RJ Motorsports, Pappa Squat Custom Upholstery, and Action Audio and Motorsports."
