Owning one VW pickup would be cool enough, but having two parked at home is something else. David Milan, owner and operator of Petrol Films based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, cherishes both of his VWs. The green diesel, affectionately named "Barry" is the old man work truck, which currently serves as the company/production vehicle. David says, "I plan to put a long boom out the back to shoot car commercial style sequences for my clients." Now, "Bailey" the black, gas-powered Caddy, is definitely the more pampered of the two trucks. "I just wanted to build a truck that fit the classic VW look—simple, clean, lowered with stretched rubber, and all the classic MK1 VW parts. There are so many directions you can go when building a truck, it's been nice to have two and build them completely different from each other."

As you may have already guessed, David is a Volkswagen nut. There's no doubt about that. He even admits, "I think the only reason anyone could affiliate me with the minitruck scene is because I have a miniature truck, well, two of them. I'm new to it all, but I love the amount of work that goes into the trucks." And David doesn't care if his trucks aren't 100-percent finished yet—both are under construction, and both get driven pretty hard. "I like to drive my trucks, even if they aren't done. Proof in point, Barry had a blown head gasket for the last year. I like to enjoy as I go." And the best thing about David's outlook on enjoyment is that he keeps his trucks running for others to get in on the action as well. At shows, David will set up the Petrol Films tent, air down the green company truck, and throw a legless foosball table in the bed for anybody at the show to walk up and play a game or two—rain or shine. "Building this truck in particular has been awesome, I've learned so much about rear linkage and airbag systems."

"Thanks to Joe (Dublu Inc.) for the wicked paint, Jim (Calgary Powdercoatings) for the goodies, and most of all to Lee for being an awesome wifey and helping in the garage, you rock!

Now the story behind Bailey the black Caddy is a good one. David was working at Concept-1 VW Werks, a local aftermarket shop, and was shopping around for a German pickup. He had a good lead on a truck from California, but getting it across the border was going to be much too spendy, so he found one in Canada not too far from him. He swapped in a 1.7L from his old '84 VW Jetta, busted his ass over a three-day overhaul binge to get it ready for a 15-hour blast to Coquitlam, British Columbia for the Great Canadian VW show. "It was great cruisin' with a few friends, but breaking down every 35 minutes due to timing belt issues sucked."

Even though David might not consider himself as such, we are officially anointing him an official minitrucker. David's parting words sealed the deal for us, "I've come to find out that this scene is not filled with bolt-on parts that just anyone can install, and that is motivating to me."

It's been nice to have two and build them completely different from each other.
