One of the main wishes for any show promoter is to have perfect weather for his show. But since this is a variable you can't control, you just have to take it as it comes.
So how was the weather at previous Layd Out shows? You name it, and it's happened. There have been years of heat and sun, frigid temperatures and clouds, and even a year when it snowed-snow in April! Throughout all those variations in weather, the one thing that has stayed consistent is the show is always packed with some killer rides.
This year was probably the best weather yet for this event. High 70s and plenty of sunshine covered Cherokee Park and let showgoers enjoy checking out the over 700 vehicles that covered the grass fields. There were plenty of vendors set up in the vendor area selling everything from T-shirts, air-ride parts, and one of the most important things for that weekend: snow cones.
This is one of the first big shows of the year, so people come from all over the East Coast to show off the work they got done to their projects over the long, cold winter months. There is also a big incentive to bring out that freshly finished project to this show since there is a "Debut for Dollars" event in which all of the newly finished vehicles sit in a section together and the top vehicle wins a huge cash prize. This year's prize money went to Ron Penwell and his Mazda built by Smith Chassis-the truck you see here on this month's cover. When it came time for awards, the center of the show grounds provided a perfect location in an amphitheatre setting.
Plans are already being made for the 2011 event, so make sure you mark April 8-10 on your calendar and come out and show your support.
