Pebble Pushers is a well known club on the East Coast for several reasons. First is its love of dragging on folks at any given time. Another reason is the member's love of a good party. The main reason, though, would be for the killer show the club throws in Kannapolis, North Carolina, every year. Pebble Pushers hosts Scr8pFest, which takes place the last weekend in September. Now in its fifth year, this show continues to grow and draw some of the hottest custom rides on the East Coast. In an era where most big shows tend to stray from the roots of our pastime, Pebble Pushers strives to keep it real. By that we mean that it hasn't forgotten what draws people to shows: straight up fun.
Scr8pFest was a total blast starting early Friday evening and continuing all the way up 'till the goodbyes finished on Sunday. Late Friday evening, we cruised to the showgrounds where contestants were already cleaning, dragging, hanging out, or passed out in tents. By 2:30 a.m., we headed for the hotel to get a few winks before the 8 a.m. kickoff of the show. With a good mixture of custom trucks, cars, bikes, and other things with wheels, the number of contestants quickly climbed into the hundreds by early afternoon on Saturday. Clubs big and small brought out some clean rides sporting the latest in custom mods. A couple imports sported the fully shaved look, including headlights. The trucks were just as impressive, with even one generation S-10 sporting a Trailblazer front-end swap.
Events taking place Saturday included the tug of war, which was won by Syndicate Customs. The guy in the show photos with his tongue hanging out won the rest of the games - his name is Tim and he's not well. Moving into Saturday night, things got heated up just a bit. The main attraction of the evening was definitely the dragging contest. Spark to win was the motto. Twenty-two vehicleslit up the night sky as the crowd of onlookers cheered, video-taped, and stood in awe. Pebble Pushers even had a couple of members make passes of their own; the bottom of a set of doors throws nice sparks. In the end, the dragging rights went to a gentleman known simply as Eddie. When the sparks settled from the dragging contest, the hooter meter contest got under way. Sunday brought more excitement as the lowest contest was won by an 1/8th of an inch. Two door-dragging body-dropped minis were judged twice in two different locations to make sure of the winner. Other events on Sunday included the hydraulic hop-off and a fast 'bag contest.
Sunday afternoon, Pebble Pushers tallied its judging sheets and proceeded with the awards. Largest Club went to Syndicate Customs. Tommy Cherry won Best Paint with his '97 S-10, while Jarred Franklin won Best Interior with an '02 Xterra. Best Engine Props went to Michael Jeffreys' '86 Mazda and Best Truck went to Greg King's multi-colored '94 Toyota.
